Seawolves tame D-I Catamounts in Shootout

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 23) – Senior guard Emilia Long posted 18 points and five assists Saturday to lead the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to its latest upset of an NCAA Div. I program, topping Vermont 68-52 in the third-place game of the ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (6-1) – who counted the game as an exhibition – also got 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting and six rebounds from junior forward Hedda Koehne, and 13 points from senior guard Jazzpher Evans.

The Catamounts (3-4) were led by 18 points from forward Anna Olson, but the America East Conference club was outrebounded 39-30 and hurt by 18 turnovers.

"Our guards did a terrific job controlling the pace and our posts were very sharp offensively," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy. "Even on a day when we didn't shoot a great percentage (.356, 21-59), we were able to steal some extra possessions and execute our game plan defensively. This should give us added confidence as we enter the meat of our regular-season schedule."

Coming off an overtime loss to Troy in the semifinals, the Seawolves took control midway through the opening quarter, snapping an 8-8 tie on a three-point play by Kenzie Sirowich, and stretching the lead to 22-14 at the quarter break.

Long – who made the all-tournament team along with freshman teammate Ashlyn Rean – scored just before the half to make it 40-31, before Vermont made a run midway through the third quarter.

The Catamounts cut it to 48-41 on two free throws by Anna Olson at the 2:56 mark, but would get no closer, as UAA responded with consecutive baskets by Long and Koehne.

UAA stretched its largest lead to 63-45 on two free throws by Long, who also had three steals, no turnovers and shot 7 of 8 at the charity stripe.

Rean had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Sirowich added six points (4-5 FT) to help UAA's bench outscore Vermont's 23-3.

The Seawolves return to NCAA Div. II play Friday and Saturday with games against South Dakota Mines at the Alaska Airlines Center. Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
