UAA displays depth in 70-59 win over NNU

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 15) – Sophomore Elaina Mack scored all 11 of her points after halftime and junior Jazzpher Evans had a big all-around effort Thursday to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 70-59 victory over Northwest Nazarene at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (15-7, 9-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got 10 points, five rebounds and five assists from Evans as they outrebounded the visitors from Idaho 49-38 and swept the season series.

The Nighthawks (8-13, 5-9) were led by game-highs of 19 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three blocks from forward Kendall Clark, but could not make up for rough shooting over the first three quarters.

"Our depth made a huge difference in this one," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose bench outscored NNU's 31-13. "I loved our defensive effort over the first 30 minutes, and we were able to click offensively enough in the fourth quarter to hold on. Elaina is such a good shooter, it was good to see her break out of a little slump, and Jazz made a ton of under-the-radar plays that put us in position to win."

Leading 17-16 midway through the second quarter, the Seawolves got back-to-back buckets from junior forward Kate Robertson to cap a 7-0 run, and led 26-20 at the break.

Tori Hollingshead pushed it to 31-22 on a feed from Jaisa Gamble with 6:51 on the third-quarter clock, but NNU began to chip away from the free-throw line. After Madeline Gebers made two free throws to slice it to 42-39 with 4.5 seconds left in the third, the Seawolves retook momentum when Mia Ross dribbled quickly upcourt and banked in a 35-foot trey at the buzzer.

The Nighthawks stayed within 58-52 with 3:30 remaining, but Evans drained a trey at the 3:06 mark, and provided the clincher 50 seconds later when she made a spectacular play by grabbing an offensive rebound and flipping the ball in to beat the shot clock. The Chicago native was also fouled on the nifty move, and made her free throw for a 64-54 lead.

Evans shot 4 of 8 from the field and finished with a game-best plus-19 plus/minus figure.

Hollingshead had 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks, while junior point guard Senya Rabouin collected 10 points, five rebounds and two steals.

Senior forward Vishe' Rabb made a couple big shots late as UAA shot 7 of 11 in the fourth quarter, finishing with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Gamble had six points, seven rebounds and two steals, while Robertson had six points.

The Seawolves – who clinched their program's 17th straight winning season – return to the Alaska Airlines Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip Saturday against Central Washington. Find tickets, live links and more at GoSeawolves.com.
