ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Alaska Anchorage scored three second period goals on route to a 4-2 win over Alaska Fairbanks in the final game of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup Saturday.
"I am happy for our upper classmen," said head coach Matt Shasby. "Everyone contributed, and we won the special teams battle. Nice to finally beat UAF."
The win was the first for the Seawolves over the Nanooks since a 4-0 win on Oct. 26, 2019.
Jonny Sorenson opened the scoring with a goal for the Nanooks at 7:22 of the first period.
The Seawolves took the lead thanks to a pair of quick goals early in the second period.
Aiden Westin notched his fourth goal of the season at 2:29 to tie the game at 1-1.
The Seawolves went on the powerplay immediately after the goal and capitalized 42 seconds later with a goal from Ben Almquist, his seventh of the season.
Connor Marritt netted the third goal of the period for UAA at 11:49.
Dawson Bruneski cut the Seawolve's lead to one at 9:10 of the third period, but Tanner Schachle scored the empty-netter at 18:26 to seal the win for UAA.
William Gilson and Riley Thompson each finished with two assists.
Jared Whale finished with 22 saves in net for UAA.
UAA was 1-for-3 on the powerplay and held UAF scoreless on all three of their powerplays.
UAA out-shot UAF 26-24.
Alaska Anchorage will host Long Island Feb. 10-11.
