ANCHORAGE (Mar. 2) – Junior center
Tori Hollingshead had a career-high 22 points and
Senya Rabouin scored seven of her 12 points in the extra session Saturday to propel the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to an 84-72 overtime upset of No. 9 Montana State Billings in the regular-season finale at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (18-8, 13-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a career-high 12 points from
Mia Ross and 10 points from
Ja'Niah Alexander as they set a school record with 16-of-16 free-throw shooting and connected at a season-best 52.5 percent from the field.
The Yellowjackets (25-5, 16-2) were led by 22 points from forward Dyauni Boyce, who nailed a three-pointer with 2.3 seconds left to send the game to overtime. All-GNAC candidate Kola Bad Bear had 16 points despite fouling out late, but the visitors could not overcome 27 turnovers as their eight-game winning streak was snapped.
"That was an incredibly high-level game against a great team," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose squad will take the No. 3 seed into the GNAC Tournament next week in Ellensburg, Wash. "After our great start, we knew Billings would make their runs, but we stood tall and never lost our composure. Even when they sent it to OT, we kept playing our game, and our defense really stepped up. This should hopefully impress the NCAA regional committee and gives us a ton of confidence going into the postseason."
Entering the week outside the NCAA Tournament bubble at No. 9 in the West Region, the Seawolves took early control by shooting 9 of 15 in the opening quarter. Hollingshead and
Elaina Mack scored six points apiece in the first 10 minutes to help build a 21-9 lead, and UAA took a 37-25 edge at halftime.
Alexander intercepted a pass by Danielle Zahn and coasted in for a layup to make it 50-36 with 4:09 left in the third quarter, but the visitors – ranked No. 2 in the West Region – began to chip away after that.
Bad Bear made two free throws to bring Billings within 52-46 at the end of three quarters, and two more charities for a 62-62 tie at the 3:47 mark. UAA answered with five straight points on a three by Rabouin and a layup by
Kya Pearson, but could not deliver the dagger on their next three possessions.
Trailing by three, the Yellowjackets called timeout with 5.6 ticks left and the ball set to inbounds right next to their bench. Billings executed its play perfectly, with Boyce popping off a screen and swishing the tying trey with 2.3 seconds remaining.
UAA advanced the ball to midcourt with a timeout, but Rabouin's inbounds pass was intercepted and time ran out.
Still tied early in overtime, Rabouin gave UAA the lead for good when she beat the shot-clock buzzer with a step-back three-pointer, and Hollingshead added a layup on a perfect dish from Mack at the 3-minute mark. Billings did not crack the scoreboard until Kortney Nelson's bank shot made it 74-69 with 1:11 remaining, and the visitors would get no closer.
A transfer from Umpqua (Ore.) Community College, Hollingshead improved her career high by one point for the second time in three games, shooting 8 of 13 from the field and 6 of 6 on charities. She also tied Alexander with a game-high six rebounds and swatted three Yellowjacket shots.
Ross – a JC teammate of Rabouin's at Central Arizona College – shot 6 of 8 from the floor and added three assists as she topped her previous scoring high by one point.
Rabouin – who had just two points and four fouls with four minutes left in regulation – finished 4 of 7 from the floor (2-3 3FG), along with a pair of assists.
Jazzpher Evans scored eight points, and Pearson contributed eight points (3-5 FG, 2-2 3FG), three rebounds and a career-high-tying five steals.
The Seawolves face a rematch with No. 6 seed Seattle Pacific on Thursday in the GNAC Tournament quarterfinals at 11 a.m. AST, with the winner to face No. 2 seed Western Washington on Friday. Find live video and stats links for the entire GNAC Tournament at gnacsports.com.
