ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – University of Alaska Anchorage student-athlete Joshua Caleb will be taking his talents to the world stage when he competes at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru August 27-31.
Caleb will represent his home country of Nigeria in the 400-meter dash and may be selected for the mixed or men's 4x400 relays.
"My goals for the world U20 championships are to make history and make a name for myself and my country," said Caleb.
Caleb represented Nigeria at the African U20 Championships in Ndola, Zambia in 2023, where he made it to the finals of the 400.
Caleb rewrote the history books during his freshman year at UAA setting six school records, winning three GNAC titles and two All-American honors. He was named the GNAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year for all sports, and was named the GNAC Male Freshman of the Year for both indoor and outdoor track and field.
"Obviously exciting news for Josh to get the call up," said associate track and field coach Ray Shadowens. "For those not familiar with team Nigeria, they have a strong history in the sprints, so it's no small feat to be asked to run for the U20 team. Especially since josh is still so young. I'm glad team Nigeria recognizes what we already know up in Alaska. Yes, he's fast, but his potential is through the roof. I think this is just the first step towards bigger goals, with the possibility of a call up to the senior team in four years in LA not out of the question."
