Seawolves register Saturday split at Augie Classic

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Sept. 7) – Larssen Anderson ripped 14 kills and senior Leilani Elder matched her career high with 11 kills Saturday to lead the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-17, 18-25, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Augustana at the Sanford Pentagon.

Setters Kadyn Osborne and Hannah Trotter combined for 43 assists, 10 digs and three aces as the Seawolves (4-3) salvaged a split of their final two matches at the Augustana Classic, following a 3-0 loss to Northern State in the morning.

The Vikings (2-2) were led by 14 kills from Brooke Berens, and 40 assists and 10 digs from setter Lucy Bartee.

"The team did a great job refocusing for the afternoon match after a subpar performance in the morning," said UAA coach Stacie Meisner, whose squad outhit the hosts .226 to .116. "We played a complete match against a good team, and that's what we will need to continue to do next week against good teams in Fairbanks."

Taking the court just three hours after the loss, the Seawolves showed no ill effects, jumping to a 6-1 lead and forcing an early Augustana timeout. Anderson registered five kills on six attacks and Trotter dished six of her 21 assists in the opening frame to pull away.

The Vikings flipped the script in the second, leading from start to finish to tie the match 1-1.

Elder put UAA ahead 16-10 in the third with a kill, before Augustana rallied within 19-18 in the pivotal set. The Seawolves responded with a 6-1 surge to end it, featuring a pair of kills each from Bethany Tuchardt and Katie Birtcil-Tipton.

The final frame featured six ties and three lead changes before the Seawolves took over in the late going again. Trailing 16-15, Tia Allen started a 3-0 Seawolf run with one of her eight kills, and Tuchardt blasted kills on four of the final five rallies to clinch the victory.

Tuchardt finished with nine kills, while Allen led the visitors with 15 digs.

The team's only fourth-year senior, Elder matched her career-high kills total for the third time, hitting .400 and adding four block assists. Fellow middle blocker Avery Northcutt collected four kills, four digs and a match-high six total blocks, including a solo stuff.

The Seawolves return to action for their final three non-conference matches next week in Fairbanks, starting with a Thursday 11 a.m. opening serve against Felician. Find links to live video and stats at GoSeawolves.com.
