ANCHORAGE (Jan. 11) – Junior forward
Bishop Tosi scored a season-high 19 points, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not find its offensive rhythm Saturday, falling 64-52 to Central Washington at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (10-9, 3-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 16 points, six rebounds and a career-high four steals from junior guard
Hasaan Herrington in the rematch of last year's GNAC Tournament title game.
The Wildcats (10-5, 4-1) were led by 15 points and 10 rebounds from forward Maverick Sanders as they outshot the hosts .531 to .339 and outrebounded them 38-22.
"We played hard and defended well – holding one of the better offensive teams in the league to 64 points – but we have to be able to finish shots around the basket and take advantage of their turnovers," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne.
In a game featuring squads who both made last season's NCAA Div. II Tournament, the Seawolves controlled the early action, going ahead 20-11 on consecutive baskets from Herrington and Tosi.
The Wildcats used a timely timeout to switch the momentum though, answering with a 20-2 surge to lead 31-23 at halftime.
Despite facing a pair of double-digit deficits early in the second half, the Seawolves continued to chip away behind Herrington, who scored five straight points to make it 40-37 at the 14:15 mark.
The former East Anchorage High School star went coast-to-coast for an 'and-one' layup to make it 44-42 with 11:19 to play, but the Wildcats took control from there. CWU center Mitch Brizee scored consecutively on slip-screen layups to extend his team's lead to 57-44 with 6:16 left, helping the visitors shoot 60 percent (15 of 25) in the second half.
Tosi shot 9 of 21 from the floor and grabbed four rebounds, while senior guard
Sean Evans contributed nine points, five assists, two steals and no turnovers.
UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. to face arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks. Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
