ANCHORAGE (Jan. 18) – Senior center
Tori Hollingshead notched her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds Saturday, helping the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team remain unbeaten in league play with a 67-59 victory over Western Washington at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (16-2, 7-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three blocks from freshman forward
Ashlyn Rean, plus a career-high-tying 11 points from senior guard
Ja'Niah Alexander, as they outrebounded the visitors 43-21 and outshot them .464 to .407.
The Vikings (10-7, 5-3) got a game-high 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting (6-8 3FG) from wing Olivia Wickstrom, while Alyson Deaver and Maddy Grandbois each had 11 points and five rebounds for the defending GNAC Tournament champions.
"It's always a battle in this rivalry, and tonight was no exception," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team extended to a two-game lead over a trio of pursuers in the GNAC standings. "Our bigs played extremely well all night and finished around the basket, and we got a nice scoring lift from Ja'Niah. Most importantly, we had a couple players who weren't having their best statistical games step up at the end with some key plays, both offensively and defensively. I'm proud of the way we're continuing to battle through adversity, and excited for another challenging road trip next week."
Looking to erase the memory of last season's 75-60 GNAC Tournament semifinal loss that unexpectedly ended their 2023-24 season, the Seawolves grabbed control with a 13-0 first-quarter run, making it 20-7 on a three-pointer from
Elaina Mack.
The Vikings began to heat up in the second quarter, however, shooting 4 of 6 as a team from long range to draw within 31-30 at halftime.
Wickstrom knocked down a pair of shots in the opening minute of the third quarter to snag a 35-34 lead for her team, before Rean sparked an 8-0 Seawolf surge with two inside buckets of her own.
UAA led 52-50 after three quarters and 57-54 when Wickstrom scored again in the paint with 7:53 remaining, but the visitors would get shut out for the next five-plus minutes. Hollingshead pushed UAA's lead to 61-54 with a layup at the 3:31 mark, and finished inside again off a dish from
Emilia Long to make it 65-59 with 1:38 remaining.
Coming off a 21-point, 10-rebound effort in Thursday's win over Simon Fraser, Hollingshead shot 4 of 6 from the field and 5 of 8 at the foul stripe, while tying Rean for game-high honors with three blocks.
It was the second collegiate double-double for Rean, a rookie from Rangiora, New Zealand, who shot 5 of 12 and grabbed half of her rebounds on the offensive end.
Alexander shot 4 of 5 from the field (2-2 3FG) and ripped four rebounds, while Long fought through foul trouble to collect 11 points and five assists. Mack made it five Seawolves in double figures with 12 points (2-5 3FG), and senior forward
Jaisa Gamble had five points, five rebounds, three assists and a key late steal, doing most of her damage in the final 10 minutes.
The Seawolves conclude the first round of GNAC play next week with a pair of road games, starting Saturday (6:30 pm AST) at Seattle Pacific. Find live video and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
