INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 19) – With two matches remaining in the regular season, the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team has improved its playoff standing in the NCAA Div. II West Regional rankings, rising to No. 2 after a pair of road victories last week.
With a 21-5 overall record, the Seawolves are one of five Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams among the top 10 in the West, along with No. 3 Simon Fraser (18-4), No. 5 Alaska Fairbanks (21-5), No. 6 Western Washington (18-5) and No. 7 Central Washington (17-6).
Point Loma (23-3) remains No. 1, while fellow Pacific West Conference squad Fresno Pacific fell two spots to No. 4. Cal Poly Pomona is the lone California Collegiate Athletic Association team in the top eight, while UAA non-conference opponents Hawaii Hilo and Cal State San Bernardino round out the top 10.
The GNAC regular-season champion and the Pac West and CCAA Tournament champions receive automatic berths to the NCAA West Regional Championships, along with the next five highest ranked teams at the conclusion of the season. This is the final public regional poll, with the announcement of the NCAA playoff field Monday, Nov. 24 at 3:30 pm AST.
The Seawolves enter Thursday's home contest against Montana State Billings in a four-way tie for second place in the GNAC standings at 12-4, one match behind Central Washington (13-3). UAA hosts Seattle Pacific in the regular-season finale Saturday (noon) at the Alaska Airlines Center.
