LAKELAND, Fla. (Nov. 2) – Seniors
Hasaan Herrington and
Akok Machar scored 12 points apiece as the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team fell 96-62 to nationally 4th-ranked Daemen on Sunday night in the finale of the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at Jenkins Field House.
The Seawolves (0-2) also got a career-high 10 points from senior forward
John McFadden in their first meeting with the Buffalo, N.Y., program.
The Wildcats (2-0) – who return four starters from last year's 28-1 squad – were led by 17 points and 16 rebounds from East Coast Conference Preseason Player of the Year Benjamin Bill. Guard Ryan Heath added 16 points as Daemen shot 12 of 13 from three-point range in the opening half to lead 68-25 at the break.
"We are pretty banged up right now, and it showed in the first half against an extremely talented and experienced opponent," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "I'm proud of the fight we showed in the second half, though, and I'm sure that we will learn some things from tonight. We're looking forward to getting back home and seeing our fans come out and support us next weekend."
The Seawolves played their best over the first six minutes of the second half, slicing into the deficit on steals and breakaway layups by Machar and Herrington.
McFadden shot 4 of 6 from the floor with three rebounds and a block, while senior forward
Bishop Tosi had eight points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior guard
Cole Johnson led UAA with four assists.
The Seawolves make their Alaska Airlines Center debut next week, taking on NAIA foe Evergreen State in a pair of contests. Friday's opener will be a special 11 a.m. start time as UAA welcomes thousands of Anchorage School District fifth-graders for the annual Slam Dunk Into Higher Education game.
