Seawolves blast 'Jackets for 22nd victory

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 20) – Freshman Emma Beck ripped 11 kills on .526 hitting and senior Madison Galloway made 15 digs Thursday to help the Alaska Anchorage volleyball roll to a 25-13, 25-14, 25-13 sweep of Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, the Seawolves (22-5, 13-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 12 kills on .360 hitting from junior Lee Ivakina and 35 assists from freshman setter Johana Malikova as they outhit the visitors .376 to .056.

The Yellowjackets (2-21, 0-17) were led by six kills on .278 hitting from Addison Holcomb as they remained winless against NCAA Div. II competition this season.

"I'm happy that we showed good focus and got the job done," said UAA head coach Stacie Meisner, whose team remained alive for a chance to share the GNAC title. "We'll need to keep our foot on the pedal Saturday against a dangerous opponent (Seattle Pacific)."

Aiming for their 14th straight victory and 10th straight sweep of the Yellowjackets, the Seawolves dominated from the opening serve in each set, going up 4-1 in the first, 4-0 in the second and 5-0 in the third.

UAA hit a blazing .533 (17 kills-1 error-30 attacks) in the opening frame and held the Yelowjackets to a -.100 mark in the third. The 40 points scored by Billings equaled the ninth-fewest allowed by a Seawolf team since 25-point rally scoring came into effect in 2008.

A rightside hitter from Kenai, Beck hit over .500 for the second time this year against Billings, while outside hitter Tia Allen (8 kills, .412 att%, 12 digs) and middle blocker Bella Burney (7 kills, .353 att%, 2 block assists) also registered plus-.350 attack percentages.

Junior serving specialist Elena Hansen had 10 digs to reach double figures for the fifth time as a Seawolf, and Galloway led the way with three aces.

Freshman middle blocker Lauren Hutchinson saw her first collegiate action after having her redshirt removed midseason, contributing a kill and two block assists.

The Seawolves close the regular season Saturday at noon against Seattle Pacific, with 'senior day' ceremonies planned before the match at the Alaska Airlines Center. Should UAA win and Central Washington lose at Simon Fraser, that would likely create a four-way tie for the GNAC title between CWU, SFU, UAA and Alaska Fairbanks.

The announcement of the NCAA West Regional Championships field will be made Monday at 3:30 pm at ncaa.com, with that tournament set for Dec. 4-6, presumably hosted by the highest seed.

NOTES: UAA has won 29 of the past 30 meetings against MSUB, with Billings's lone victory coming in 2017 … with her first dig Thursday, Allen became only the second player in GNAC history to accumulate at least 1,200 kills, 1,200 digs and 100 aces … Galloway moved into 10th place on UAA's career list with 435 sets played … Galloway already stands No. 4 on UAA's digs list, increasing her total to 1,381 … UAA's 22 victories are now tied for ninth-most in the program's 46-year history.
