ANCHORAGE (Nov. 28) – Junior forward
Sylas Williams had 13 points and eight rebounds as the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team delivered another sterling defensive performance Friday to earn a 63-50 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt in the Sprite Tundra Tip-Off at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (7-2) also got 12 points apiece from seniors
Bishop Tosi and
Akok Machar, using a 20-6 advantage in points off turnovers to secure the victory.
The Lumberjacks (2-3) got a game-high 16 points from forward Zaveion Bineyard, but the visitors were outshot .463 to .405 and unable to capitalize on a 31-23 rebounding edge.
"Our guys have really bought in and understand what we're doing defensively, and we were able to keep Humboldt from ever feeling comfortable in the flow of their offense," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "We got big contributions up and down the bench, too, and did a great job of limiting our turnovers."
Meeting their former Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival for the first time since 2014, the Seawolves started the game with an 8-0 run, getting four points apiece from Tosi and Machar.
Jesse Stines made a pair of free throws to push it to 29-15 at the 7:52 mark, and
Hasaan Herrington scored with six seconds on the clock to end a Humboldt surge and make it 33-25 at the break.
The Lumberjacks kept chopping away in the first six minutes of the second half, cutting it to 40-34 on a fastbreak dunk by Vineyard, but the momentum would end there for the California Collegiate Athletic Association club.
Herrington scored a layup on a perfect feed from
John McFadden to begin the clinching run, and Tosi made it 54-36 on a beautiful pick-and-roll dunk from
Zach Ibbetson.
Herrington finished with seven points, six assists and no turnovers in 29 minutes, while Tosi shot 6 of 10 from the floor and nabbed three offensive rebounds.
Jeremiah Coleman had nine points (3-4 3FG), and McFadden collected six points (3-4 FG), two rebounds, three assists, no turnovers and a steal in 15 clutch minutes off the bench.
Williams shot 2 of 3 from long range and 4 of 4 at the foul stripe.
Winners of seven straight, the Seawolves conclude the Sprite Tundra Tip-Off with a Saturday 7:30 pm meeting against Westmont (2-3) at the Alaska Airlines Center. Find tickets, live links and more at GoSeawolves.com.
