Warriors halt Seawolves' win streak, 64-58

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 29) – Senior guard Akok Machar scored 14 points, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not rally from an early deficit Saturday, falling 64-58 to Westmont in the finale of the Sprite Tundra Tip-Off at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (7-3) also got 12 points, three assists, three steals and no turnovers from senior guard Hasaan Herrington as their seven-game win streak was snapped.

The Warriors (3-3) were led by 23 points on 5-of-9 three-point shooting from reserve guard JV Brown, while tournament Most Outstanding Player Jarrett Bryant had 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the visitors from Santa Barbara, Calif.

"They played like a desperate team and we played like a comfortable team," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "We didn't match their physicality and lost our focus during key stretches."

Looking to capitalize on momentum from Friday's 63-50 win over Cal Poly Humboldt, the Seawolves got five early points from junior forward Sylas Williams to claim a 15-9 lead after 10 minutes. UAA would hit a cold spell over the next five minutes, however, as Westmont used a 12-0 run to take the lead for good.

Herrington kept the hosts within 24-22 when he converted a fastbreak layup from Machar at the 2:53 mark, before the Warriors closed the half with a 9-1 surge.

The Seawolves sliced it to a single-digit game twice midway through the second half, only to see the Pacific West Conference foe gain a 52-34 advantage on a fastbreak basket from Huston at the 9:04 mark.

UAA rallied late, but could get no closer than the final margin.

Machar shot 5 of 10 from the field, along with seven rebounds and four assists, as he joined Herrington on the all-tournament team. Jesse Stines tied career highs with 11 points and seven rebounds, while fellow senior forward John McFadden had five points, five rebounds and two blocks.

The Seawolves open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next week with road games against Saint Martin's on Thursday (6:30 pm AST) and Western Oregon on Saturday (3:15 pm AST). Find live links at GoSeawolves.com.
