Sylas Williams posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not make up an early deficit Thursday, falling 78-63 to Saint Martin's in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener at Marcus Pavilion.
The Seawolves (7-4, 0-1 GNAC) also got 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and no turnovers from senior wing
Hasaan Herrington, along with 11 points from senior guard
Akok Machar.
The Saints (6-2, 1-0) were led by 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting from guard Kaden Hansen as they shot 53 percent from the field and 12 of 26 (.462) on three-pointers. Starting forward Diego Trejo-Delgado added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Looking for their third straight victory in Lacey, the Seawolves fell behind 27-8 in the opening 10 minutes before Herrington sliced it to 30-18 on a three-pointer at the 7:04 mark. UAA trailed 42-27 at the halftime break and stayed within striking distance at 57-45 when
Elijah Mobley made two free throws with 11:43 remaining. The Seawolves would get no closer, however, as the hosts slowly extended their lead down the stretch.
Williams grabbed five of his rebounds on the offensive glass, while senior forward
Bishop Tosi added seven points, six rebounds and two steals. Mobley finished with seven points, and senior forward
John McFadden had five points, three steals and no turnovers.
