ANCHORAGE (Nov. 7) – Newcomers
Mahaila Harrison and
Mylee Anderson scored 23 points apiece as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team won its debut under new head coach
Matt Thune, defeating Northwest University 107-82 at the Alaska Airlines Center on Friday night.
The Seawolves (1-0) also got 17 points and career highs of nine rebounds and five assists from their lone returner – senior guard
Elaina Mack – as they raced to a 36-14 first-quarter edge and led comfortably throughout.
UAA finished 16 of 44 from long distance, tying the program record for three-pointers made and breaking the previous mark for attempts by one.
The Eagles (0-1), an NAIA program from Kirkland, Wash., were led by 17 points from guard Jersey McGehee, but the visitors were outrebounded 50-32.
"We came out focused and played very crisp offensively in the first half," said Thune, who took over the Seawolf program last spring. "We'll need to show a more consistent performance over four quarters if we want to reach our goals, but it's great to get that first win in the books regardless."
Leading 13-9 in the early going, the Seawolves took over completely with a 23-3 run over a five-minute span, boosted by consecutive threes from Harrison, Mack and
Faith Mersburgh (9 points, 5 assists, 2 steals).
The Seawolves' 36 points were their third-most in any quarter since women's college basketball went to quarters in 2015-16, while their 65-36 halftime lead marked the fourth-most first-half points in program history.
A three-time all-state guard from Wasilla, Anderson shot 4 of 9 from deep and added six assists and five rebounds. Fellow Alaskan freshman
Jennifer Nash (Tikigaq) also notched double figures in her collegiate debut with 10 points.
Harrison – a transfer from Div. I VCU – shot 10 of 14 overall and 3 of 6 from deep, along with four assists, two steals and just one turnover.
Sophomore
Kimberly Carrada Sanchez also excelled in her debut as the transfer notched 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and no turnovers against her former teammates.
Junior center
Lillie Duffin had eight points, 10 rebounds and three assists.
