Herrington's heroics help Seawolves win thriller

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 1) – Junior guard Hasaan Herrington scored 17 points, including the game-winning layup with four seconds remaining Saturday, lifting the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to a 59-58 victory over Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (11-13, 4-7 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points and nine rebounds from junior guard Tyler Burraston as they outrebounded the visitors 44-31, turning 17 offensive boards into a 20-9 advantage in second-chance points.

The Red Leafs (7-14, 3-8) were led by 20 points and six assists from guard Irish Coquia, whose jump shot trickled off the rim at the buzzer. SFU also got 20 points from guard Tate Christiansen, but leading scorer Luke Howard (17.7 ppg) was held to four points on 1-of-4 shooting.

"I'm proud of our defensive intensity tonight," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "We defended extremely well after the first four minutes – probably one of our best performances of the year. SFU has four very good offensive players, and we were able to limit three of them. Offensively, we were not pretty, but we executed in crunch time and our offensive rebounding was excellent. It was a big performance by Hasaan, and we got a nice lift off the bench from Luke Devine."

After earning a 91-87 road victory over SFU four weeks ago in its highest-scoring D-II game of the season, UAA found itself in a defensive battle in the rematch. The Red Leafs jumped to a 13-3 edge after four and a half minutes, and led 30-24 at the break.

The Seawolves continued to chip away after halftime, taking a 41-40 lead on a Burraston three-pointer with 10 minutes to play.

Simon Fraser answered with a 16-6 surge over the next four minutes, though, pulling ahead 54-47 on a trey by Christiansen. Looking for a spark, the Seawolves got one when Herrington – who stands 6-3 – bolted high to swat the shot of Red Leafs 7-footer Zach Stone, turning the ensuing rebound into two free throws for Jesse Stines at the other end.

UAA's full-court press then paid major dividends as Dillon Barrientos collected two steals in a 13-second span, converting those chances into layups by Stines and Herrington to make it a 54-53 deficit with 2:33 left.

After exchanging scores, Barrientos gave UAA a 57-56 lead when he swished both ends of a one-and-one with 47 seconds on the clock. Christiansen would miss a three-pointer on the other end, but an offensive board by Tobe Ezeokafor led to a go-ahead jumper by Coquia with 18 seconds to play.

UAA called timeout with 12 seconds left, setting up a feed from Barrientos to Herrington, who drove strong to the hole and banked home a layup with 4.1 ticks remaining. Following an SFU timeout, the Canadians got the ball to Coquia, who drove the length of the court, only to see his 12-foot jumper bounce tantalizingly on the rim and fall off at the buzzer.

Herrington – a former East Anchorage High School star – shot 6 of 9 from the floor and 5 of 6 on free throws, along with eight rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Stines added nine points on 3-of-6 shooting, and Barrientos collected eight points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals as the Seawolves snapped a six-game losing skid.

Devine – a fourth-year senior from Wasilla – finished with a career-high eight rebounds in 12 critical minutes off the bench, grabbing three more boards than his previous best.

UAA hits the road for its next three games, beginning Thursday (6:30 p.m.) against Central Washington in Ellensburg, Wash. Find live video and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
