FAIRBANKS, Alaska (Feb. 15) – Junior forward
Bishop Tosi had 10 points and nine rebounds, but a late Alaska Anchorage comeback attempt fell short Saturday in a 70-63 men's basketball loss to Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.
The Seawolves (11-16, 4-10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got a team-high 13 points from junior guard
Tyler Burraston, along with 10 points, three assists, two steals and a career-high three blocks from junior wing
Hasaan Herrington.
The Nanooks (10-13, 6-8) were led by 19 points, six rebounds and six assists from guard Isaiah Saams-Hoy as they snapped a six-game losing streak.
Playing their third straight road game, the Seawolves got off to a solid start, establishing a 23-14 lead on consecutive three-pointers from Herrington and
Dillon Barrientos. Sophomore guard
Zach Ibbetson nailed the last of seven first-half treys by the Seawolves to push their largest advantage to 33-21, but the momentum would not last.
Despite a solid offensive start to the second half, UAA could not slow a hot shooting display by the Nanooks, who made 7 of 9 threes over the opening 10 minutes. UAF grabbed the lead at 47-46 at the 12:48 mark, and extended its largest edge to 62-53 on Griffin Effenberger's three-pointer with 5:16 remaining.
UAA got four free throws from Tosi and a pull-up, transition trey by Burraston to scratch within 62-60 at the two-minute mark, but UAF guard Ketan Sidhu answered with his only basket of the game on a three-pointer. Saams-Hoy then scored and got fouled in transition following a long defensive rebound, stretching it back to 68-60.
Tosi shot 2 of 4 from the field and 6 of 8 at the foul stripe, along with a career-high four steals.
Burraston made 3 of 6 three-pointers and nabbed four rebounds, while Ibbetson and Barrientos scored eight points apiece. Junior forward
Jesse Stines had six rebounds, two blocks and a career-high four assists.
The Seawolves conclude their home season next week with games Thursday against Montana State Billings and Saturday against Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center. Both contests tip at 7:30 p.m., with tickets and live links available at GoSeawolves.com.
