Tosi tallies 26 in close loss to Yellowjackets

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 20) – Junior forward Bishop Tosi neared a career scoring high with 26 points, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not complete a second-half comeback Thursday in a 66-60 loss to Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (11-17, 4-11 GNAC) also got 16 points from junior wing Hasaan Herrington, plus 11 points and six rebounds from junior guard Tyler Burraston.

The Yellowjackets (19-10, 10-6) were led by 19 points and nine assists from forward Kael Robinson, earning their fourth straight win and rising into a tie for third in the league standings.

Ranked top-10 in the NCAA Div. II stats in scoring defense (63.8 ppg), UAA held Billings without a field goal over a five-minute stretch to claim an early 10-2 lead. The Yellowjackets began to chip away, however, wresting the lead for good on a basket by Robinson, and getting a three from Brendon Johnson to go up 23-19.

After trailing 31-23 at halftime and 37-27 with 16 minutes left, the Seawolf offense began to click behind the play of Tosi and Herrington. Former high school rivals (Herrington at East Anchorage and Tosi at Bartlett), the pair accounted for the game's next eight points, capping the run on a feed from Tosi to Herrington for an and-one layup.

UAA stayed within 41-39 on a layup by Tosi at the 12:36 mark, but would get no closer, thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Billings guard Jalen Tot (11points, 5 rebounds).

Herrington made it 53-50 with a free throw with three minutes left, before the Yellowjackets sealed it with two more big plays by Tot. The senior guard hit two free throws and then poked away the ball in traffic and fed a three-point assist to make it 58-50.

Tosi shot 11 of 14 from the floor and snagged six rebounds, coming two points shy of matching his career high.

Herrington made a UAA season-high 10 free throws (on 12 attempts), while Burraston connected on 3 of 8 from long range.

Playing the penultimate home game of his collegiate career, senior guard Dillon Barrientos dished a career-high 10 assists.

The Seawolves conclude their home season Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. tip against another traditional rival, Seattle Pacific. Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
