Seawolves fall to Wolves in Monmouth, 69-68

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Feb. 27) – Senior guard Dillon Barrientos matched his career high with 20 points, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not get the late defensive stop it needed Thursday in a 69-68 loss to Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (11-19, 4-13 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 13 points and a career-high-tying nine rebounds from junior wing Hasaan Herrington as they settled for a season split with the Wolves (5-22, 2-15).

Western Oregon was led by 18 points from Jason Gallant, while reserve guard O'Shen Cazimero had eight points and the game-winning basket with 10 seconds remaining.

The game featured 10 ties and nine lead changes, with neither team leading by more than eight points. Barrientos slithered inside for a layup just before the halftime buzzer to give UAA a 36-34 lead at the break, and Tyler Burraston sank a trey to make it 46-41 early in the second half.

Sophomore guard Zach Ibbetson snagged consecutive steals that led directly to baskets and a 53-45 advantage at the 10-minute mark, but the hosts would not go away, answering with a 13-2 surge.

Tied 61-61 with under four minutes left, the Seawolves got scores on consecutive possessions from Herrington, Burraston and Bishop Tosi, only to see the Wolves tie it each time. With the clock winding under 30 seconds, Herrington was rewarded with a shooting foul on a strong drive to the basket, and swished the first free throw for a 68-67 lead. The second attempt rattled in and out, however, and Cazimero scored on a driving layup to put his team ahead.

UAA called timeout and inbounded in front of its bench with 5.3 seconds remaining, but Barrientos missed a midrange jumper and the clock expired before Tosi could attempt a putback.

Barrientos shot 4 of 9 from three-point range to establish a career scoring best against D-II competition, while dishing six assists with just one turnover.

Burraston scored 14 points (5-10 FG, 4-8 3FG) and Tosi finished with eight points (4-6 FG) and two steals.

The Seawolves conclude the season Saturday at 4:15 pm AST against Saint Martin's in Lacey, Wash. Find live video and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
