Schmidtke claims GNAC title

BELLINGHAM, WASH. – University of Alaska Anchorage freshman Tobin Schmidtke won the GNAC decathlon title Tuesday in Bellingham.

The native of Hohen Neuendorf, Germany scored 6,110 points, the fifth-best score in school history. Schmidtke scored 600+ points in seven of the ten events, 100 (11.90, 671 points), long jump (6.36/20-10.5, 666 points), 400 (52.98, 682 points), 110 hurdles (16.66, 660 points), pole vault (4.20/13-9.25, 673 points), javelin (51.77/169-10, 615 points) and 1,500 (4:53.20, 600 points). His pole vault mark ranks fourth-best all-time at UAA.

Sophomore Vivien Liessfeld finished eighth in the heptathlon with 3,804 points. The native of Neuwied, Germany, scored 799 points in the hurdles (15.33) and 755 points in the 200 (26.49). Her javelin throw of 37.88/124-3 (627 points) ranks third all-time at UAA.

The UAA men rank second with 10 points and the women rank fifth with one point in the team standings of the GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue May 9-10 in Bellingham, Wash.
