Seawolves fall in final minutes in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Jan. 29) – Alaska Anchorage got 18 points apiece from its trio of leading scorers, but Western Washington closed with an 11-2 run Thursday to claim an 84-75 men's basketball victory at Carver Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (14-7, 6-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) go 18 points and nine rebounds from junior forward Sylas Williams and 18 points, four rebounds and five assists from senior guard Hasaan Herrington as they settled for a season split with the Vikings.

Senior forward Bishop Tosi had 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and seven rebounds, while senior guard Akok Machar contributed six points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

The Vikings (10-11, 4-6) were led by 26 points on 8-of-10 shooting from Nehemiah Pollard and 19 points each from Aidan Rice and Dennis Johnson.

"We did not play up to our capabilities tonight," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team entered tied for second in the GNAC standings. "Defensively we were out of sync and not as dialed in on our assignments. Offensively we got away from what makes us successful and did not control the tempo as we needed. Credit to WWU on dictating tempo. We will need to be better Saturday night (at Simon Fraser)."

Unlike UAA's 90-56 victory Jan. 3 in Anchorage, the rematch went back and forth throughout, featuring five ties, 10 lead changes and a nearly equal amount of time with the lead.

The Vikings erased a 29-19 deficit thanks to consecutive three-pointers from Pollard, rallying for a 37-35 advantage at the break.

UAA got a pair of big baskets and an assist from reserve guard Zach Ibbetson to stay within a pair of possessions for much of the second half, before WWU stretched its largest lead to 68-60 with 7:24 remaining.

The Seawolves began to chip away with free throws from Tosi and Williams, however, and Machar tipped in a miss with 2:51 left to slice it to 73-71. Herrington stole the inbounds pass and converted two free throws to tie it, but the momentum ended there.

UAA seemed to get a stop when a strong defensive challenge forced Johnson to miss a dunk on the ensuing possession, only to see the long carom make its way to Rice, who sank the eventual game-winning three-pointer from the top of the key.

Tosi made it 76-75 on a strong post-up move with 1:44 remaining, but Johnson answered with an and-one layup, and the hosts clinched it from the foul stripe.

Williams shot 7 of 15 from the floor, along with two blocks, one assist and no turnovers, as the Washington native barely missed his seventh double-double.

Ibbetson had 8 points on 3-of-3 shooting, one assist and no turnovers in 11 minutes off the bench.

UAA completes its road trip Saturday with a 6 p.m. AST tip against Simon Fraser in Burnaby, British Columbia. Find live video and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
