BURNABY, British Columbia (Jan. 31) – Senior guard
Hasaan Herrington led five Alaska Anchorage players in double figures with 14 points Saturday, and UAA's defense stood tall again in a 69-54 men's basketball victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (15-7, 7-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks from junior forward
Sylas Williams as they won for the 10th straight time against SFU and improved to 31-2 in the all-time series.
The Red Leafs (5-16, 2-9) got game highs of 18 points from center Zach Stone and six assists from point guard Mikyle Malabuyoc, but were outrebounded 35-22 and outshot .475 (28-59) to .415 (17-41) by the visitors.
"It was a good team win," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "We were very balanced and did a great job forcing turnovers and controlling rebounding.
John McFadden gave us a big early spark on both ends of the floor."
Meeting a month after UAA's 80-71 home victory, the Seawolves broke open a 9-9 game in the early going when McFadden came off the bench with a flurry of positive plays. The 6-7 forward dished a go-ahead assist to Herrington, scored six points on three shots, and made an emphatic block during a 15-5 Seawolf run that claimed the lead for good.
Senior forward
Akok Machar also keyed the first-half rally to help UAA earn a 38-28 lead at the break, finishing with 10 points (4-7 FG) and three steals.
Sartaj Bhangu scored inside to slice his team's deficit to 42-33 with 15:51 remaining, but the Seawolves answered with an old-fashioned three-point play from Herrington, and senior guard
Zach Ibbetson nailed a corner three-pointer to make it 54-39 at the 10-minute mark.
UAA held SFU to three field goals over the final eight minutes and allowed only one offensive rebound by the Red Leafs in the second half.
McFadden had his GNAC season high with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting, along with three rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Ibbetson (5 points, 2-4 FG, one steal),
Jesse Stines (2 points, 2 blocks),
Jeremiah Coleman (2 points, 3 rebounds) and
Elijah Mobley (4 rebounds) also came off the bench to aid an 18-4 advantage in second-chance points.
Senior forward
Bishop Tosi had 10 points, and junior guard
Cole Johnson had six points on a pair of timely three-pointers.
With five of their last seven regular-season games at the Alaska Airlines Center, the Seawolves return home to face Central Washington (Thur., Feb. 5, 7 pm) and Northwest Nazarene (Sat., Feb. 7, 7 pm) next week. Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
