Seawolves deny Red Leafs, 83-76, for crucial GNAC win

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 14) – Senior guard Taylor Searcey collected 22 points, six rebounds and seven assists Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team repel a late Simon Fraser rally for an 83-76 victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (14-9, 6-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 21 points and nine rebounds from sophomore forward Mahaila Harrison as they swept the season series from their Canadian visitors.

The Red Leafs (9-17, 4-11) were led by 20 points from Haley de Walle and 19 points apiece from Rachel Loukes and Bree Neufeld, but were outshot .446 to .369 and outrebounded 46-34.

UAA also got a clutch effort from junior center Lillee Duffin, who scored 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting with five rebounds.

"We executed well offensively late in both halves, especially with some patient possessions that helped us fend off their comeback," said UAA head coach Matt Thune. "Lillee and Mylee Anderson didn't put up their biggest numbers, but they came through in the clutch with some nice passing and free throws that made the difference."

Looking to draw even in the GNAC standings with MSU Billings and Western Oregon with a victory, UAA trailed briefly in the first quarter and was tied 18-18 after the first 10 minutes, thanks to six early points from Harrison.

Zoe Sharpe hit a free throw to keep the visitors within 22-21 at the 7:48 mark of the second quarter, before the Seawolves answered with the eventual game-deciding surge. Harrison started the run with a pair of free throws and Anderson canned a three-pointer, before senior forward Tia Allen provided a huge lift off the bench.

Playing in her first home game as a basketball player, the former Seawolf volleyball star made a layup and dished her first career assist as UAA grabbed a 38-24 lead and took a 44-30 edge into the locker room.

UAA seemed in complete command when Elaina Mack drilled a long trey to make it 53-32 midway through the third quarter, but the Red Leafs would begin to chip away.

Neufeld hit a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter and bring her team back within single digits at 63-54, and Loukes made it a two-possession game, 67-61, with a three at the 6:53 mark.

Leading just 76-72 with 2:19 remaining, Searcey found a cutting Duffin for a layup to stretch the lead, and Anderson followed with an almost identical pass to Duffin for an 81-72 advantage with 1:47 left.

Anderson finished with eight points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Mack had seven points, six rebounds, two assists and three blocks.

Searcey shot 8 of 14 from the floor, and Allen, Alba Sanz and Kimberly Carrada Sanchez each scored five points off the bench. Allen was 2 of 3 from the floor, including a three-pointer on her first career attempt, along with two assists and no turnovers in six minutes.

With two weeks and four games remaining in the regular season, the Seawolves are now tied with Western Oregon and MSU Billings for fifth place. The top six teams in the final standings advance to the GNAC Tournament, Mar. 5-7 in Bellingham, Wash.

UAA travels south for their regular-season road finales next week, starting Thursday at 3:15 pm AST against MSU Billings. Find links to live video and stats at GoSeawolves.com.
