'Jackets down Seawolves, 65-53

BILLINGS, Mont. (Feb. 19) – A late fourth-quarter run was not enough for the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team Thursday in a 65-53 loss to Montana State Billings at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (14-10, 6-9 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) were led by 13 points, five rebounds and four steals from sophomore forward Mahaila Harrison, but were outshot .490 to .275 and outrebounded 45-37.

The Yellowjackets (15-13, 7-8) got 18 points apiece from Cassie Chestnut and Tailey Harris, overcoming 25 turnovers to earn a sweep of the season series and move a game ahead of UAA in the GNAC standings.

Meeting four weeks after a 92-91 Billings victory Jan. 24 in Anchorage, the rematch remained close for just one quarter. UAA got a pair of early baskets from junior center Lillee Duffin to go up 8-7 before the Yellowjackets retook the lead for good, forging a 19-16 edge at the quarter break.

Harrison made two free throws to stay within 21-18 with 9:30 on the second-quarter clock, but the Seawolves went on a five-minute scoreless drought and found themselves with a 35-24 halftime deficit.

Senior guard Taylor Searcey scored two of her nine points to slice it to 38-29 early in the third quarter, before Harris and Chestnut answered with consecutive baskets to make it a double-figure spread the rest of the way.

UAA got 10 points and three steals from senior guard Elaina Mack, who moved up two notches on the Seawolves' career scoring list to No. 16. Now with 1,066 points, the King Cove product needs 10 more to catch former teammate Jazzpher Evans for a top-15 spot.

Duffin finished with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Kimberly Carrada Sanchez added seven points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals off the bench.

The Seawolves conclude their regular-season road schedule with a 1 p.m. AST Saturday tip against Seattle Pacific. Find links to live video and stats at GoSeawolves.com.
