Late rally lifts Hilo to upset of UAA

ANCHORAGE - Led by guard Alan Thomas, Hawaii-Hilo scored ended the game on a 17-2 run to upset the University of Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team, 92-85 at the Sports Center tonight.


Greg Freeman had 19 points and nine rebounds for UAA (7-5, 1-2 Pac West), but Thomas delivered 33 points, six assists and seven rebounds for UHH (6-6, 1-2).


Thomas, who scored six of his points and had two assists in the game-deciding run, shot 11-of-14 from the field and converted 10-of-11 free throws.


Senior point guard Ed Kirk had 18 points and eight assists for UAA, while freshman guard Nathon Glover tallied his second straight career-high with 16 points.


UAA took an 83-75 lead with 3:58 to play when Cody Gallatin stole the ball and fed it to Kirk for a layup. After Hilo called a timeout, the Vulcans came out firing, going on an 11-0 run to go up 86-83 on two Stanley Ibia free throws. Kirk made another layup to cut the lead to one point with 58 second left, but the Seawolves couldn't find the basket the rest of the way.


The two teams play again Saturday night in a Pacific West Conference rematch. That game tips at 7:05 p.m. at the Sports Center.
