UAA hangs on to defeat Hilo in OT thriller

ANCHORAGE - Senior point guard Ed Kirk scored nine of his 20 points in overtime and the University of Alaska Anchorage survived a last-second three-point attempt by Hawaii-Hilo to post a 101-99 victory at the Sports Center tonight. The victory made UAA head coach Charlie Bruns the winningest coach in UAA men's history with 133.

Freshman forward Peter Bullock scored 21 points and grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds for UAA (8-5, 2-2 Pac West), while Stanley Ibia had 19 points and 11 rebounds for UHH (6-7, 1-3).

After Kirk made one of two free throws with 5.4 seconds remaining to make it 101-99, the Vulcans called timeout. Ibia dribbled the ball the length of the floor and got off a running, one-handed three-point attempt that bounced twice on the rim before rolling off.

UAA opened a 97-92 lead on two Kirk free throws with 1:38 remaining in the extra session, but Hilo's David LaQua made a pair of free throws and a layup to cut the lead to one. Kirk and Bullock combined to make three of four free throws to put the Seawolves ahead 100-96 with 14 seconds to go. Hilo's Kyle Bartholomew (game-high 22 points) nailed a three-pointer with six seconds left, making it 100-99 before the game-ending sequence.

UAA led by as many as 11 points in regulation, but the Vulcans kept cutting into the lead. The Seawolves held a 79-70 lead with 4:42 to play before Hilo rallied again. Ibia made a dunk with 42 seconds to play and then tied the game on a baseline jumper off glass with five seconds on the clock.

Neither team got a decent shot at the end of regulation.

Kirk, who leads the Pac West in assists per game, was two over his average with eight. Taylor Wagner (19 points), Greg Freeman (16) and Nathon Glover (13) also reach double-figures for UAA.

The Seawolves, who rank 18th in NCAA Division II in scoring, have tallied over 80 points in six straight games.

UAA gets only one day off before hosting Chaminade at 7:05 p.m. Monday at the Sports Center.
