Massey's triple-double halts losing skid

ANCHORAGE - Senior Tiffany Massey had a triple-double to help the University of Alaska Anchorage snap its eight-game losing streak with a 70-59 win over Saint Martin's at the Sports Center tonight.

Massey, a guard/forward from Payson, Utah, had 13 assists, 10 points and 10 rebounds to power UAA (3-8, 1-5 Pac West) to its first conference victory. Senior forward Kami Koehler led the Saints (6-5, 3-3 PWC) with 14 points.

Massey, who also had four steals and only one turnover, set a career-high with the 13 assists. She played the full 40 minutes for the second straight game.

Point guard Megan Buchmann led the scoring parade for the Seawolves with 13 points, while senior center Dana Bottoms contributed 11 points and seven rebounds. Bottoms also had three blocks to give her 114 for her career and push her past Sonya Welch (1985-89) for second place on the all-time UAA list.

UAA had its best shooting night of the season, hitting 52.3 percent (23-44) from the field while outrebounding the Saints 36-30. The Seawolves also hit 4-of-8 three-pointers as they averted establishing the longest losing streak in the program's history.

The Seawolves went on a 9-0 run late in the first half, capped by an Alicia Adams layup that made the score 28-15. UAA established a 36-21 halftime advantage, and the Saints could get no closer than eight points in the second half.

The Seawolves travel to nationally ranked Seattle Pacific (Jan. 11) and Western Washington (Jan. 13) as they begin a four-game road swing.
