ANCHORAGE (Sept. 4) - O'Lita McWilliams slammed a career-high 22 kills and Mindy Cason had 14 kills and five blocks to lead the Seawolf volleyball team to a 30-17, 26-30, 30-19, 30-15 victory over Cal Baptist on the opening night of the UAA Invitational.
UAA (3-2) hit an impressive .364 as a team, helped by 51 assists from setter Kasey Kuelper. Cal Baptist (3-3), an NAIA school from Riverside, Calif., got a team-high 14 kills from Lindsey Siefken.
The Seawolves came out quickly in the first game, getting seven kills from Cason and five digs from libero Kirsten Hunley to pull away. The Knights rallied in a tight second game, getting six kills from Crystal Prehn and scoring six of the final eight points to knot the match a game apiece.
UAA controlled action throughout the third game behind six kills from McWilliams, while junior Katina Ozrelic had five of her 10 kills in that frame. In the fourth, with the score tied 10-10, UAA served 10 straight points and wasn't challenged the rest of the way.
McWilliams' 22 kills and .450 attack percentage were both career highs, and the senior from Alpine, Texas, also had 15 digs to record her fourth double-double in five matches.
The Seawolves got standout performances from seniors Starr Burgan (12 kills, .478 attack pct., 4 block assists) and Kuelper (51 assists, 4 kills, 13 digs) as well.
Both teams are in action twice Friday when round-robin play will be completed. UAA plays Nova Southeastern at 11 a.m. and Western New Mexico at 7:30 p.m., while CBU takes on Western New Mexico at 1:30 p.m. and Nova Southeastern at 5 p.m. The teams with the best two records after round-robin plays will advance to Saturday's 7:30 p.m. championship match.
