ANCHORAGE (Sept. 5) - The trio of O'Lita McWilliams, Starr Burgan and Mindy Cason combined for 38 of UAA's 51 kills as the Seawolves cruised past Nova Southeastern 30-21, 30-20, 30-22 early Friday in the UAA Invitational.
With the victory, UAA (4-2) clinched a spot in Saturday's 7:30 p.m. championship match against either Western New Mexico or Cal Baptist.
Nova Southeastern (2-4), which will play in Saturday's 5 p.m. consolation match, was led by 10 kills from Lisa Parker.
The Seawolves struggled early in each game against the visitors from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., but righted themselves midway through each frame to score their third straight victory. Setter Kasey Kuelper had another strong match with 36 assists and .545 hitting (6 kills, 0 errors, 11 attempts), while fellow senior Michelle Garvin led the team with 12 digs.
McWilliams had a match-best 14 kills and hit .414 (14-2-29), while Cason and Burgan notched 12 kills apiece. Cason has now notched double-digit kills in all six UAA matches this season. Meanwhile, McWilliams continued to excel with her jump serve, recording five straight aces in the second game.
The Seawolves complete round-robin play against Western New Mexico tonight at 7:30, while Nova's final round-robin match is against Cal Baptist at 5 p.m.
