COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 28) - Dominique Ingram captured event titles on vault and bars, and Jessica Portlock led a Seawolf sweep on beam as the UAA gymnasts clipped Air Force 190.575-190.400 Friday at Cadet West Gym.
The win was the first-ever for the Seawolves (4-2) over the Falcons at the Academy, and also marked their first road dual victory over a fellow Mountain Pacific Sports Federation school.
UAA's night began shakily when freshman Lauren Magiera fell on bars to start the first rotation. But the rest of the Seawolves backed up their teammate with 9.225s or higher - led by Ingram's 9.725 - to outscore the Falcons by nearly a point on the apparatus.
Boosted on vault by a 9.8 from Ingram and 9.6s from Rachael Lehmkuhl and Mandy Kolosovsky, the Seawolves carried a half-point lead into the third rotation.
Thanks to disappointing 47.450 score on floor, UAA's lead remained tenuous heading to its final event - the beam. Meanwhile, the Falcons (1-1) were up on floor exercise, where they are most talented.
As Air Force was posting five scores of 9.6 or better on floor, the Seawolves had all the pressure on them to stay on the beam. And they did, winning the top four spots. Magiera redeemed herself with an impressive 9.625, and Sara Randall (9.65), Tiffany Staton (9.55) and Portlock (9.725) closed the door.
The Seawolves' 190.575 was the sixth-best team score in school history, while the vault (47.800), bars (47.400) and beam (47.925) scores were all among the top seven all-time. Portlock's 38.425 all-around was No. 19 on the individual list, and Ingram's vault and bars scores were in the top 10 as well.
UAA and Air Force meet up for another dual Sunday a noon AST.
