Seawolves struggle at MPSFs

DAVIS, Calif. (Mar. 25) - The Seawolf gymnastics team delivered its best showing of the season on beam but was hurt by a rough performance on bars Friday as it finished sixth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships with 189.275 points.

UAA's score was only its 10th-best in 13 meets this season, but should not affect the team's qualification for next month's USA Gymnastics National Championships. Dominique Ingram delivered UAA's highlight of the night by tying for top honors on vault with a 9.875.

Sacramento State won the meet in dominating fashion with 194.550 points, far outdistancing second-place San Jose State (192.025). UAA's final score was nearly two full points below its season average of 191.000, which would have placed it fourth for the second straight season.

But the Seawolves started the night in a hole by falling several times on bars. Freshman Jessica Portlock, going last, scored a 9.6 to give UAA only one bars mark better than 9.3.

UAA recovered on beam, getting a 9.725 from Jamie Burton, a 9.675 from Portlock and a 9.625 from senior Sara Randall on the way to a season-best 48.050 on that event. It was the No. 6 beam score in school history.

Burton also had UAA's top floor score with a 9.575.

The Seawolves' last apparatus was vault, where Portlock had a 9.525, Rachael Lehmkuhl a 9.65, and Ingram delivered her 9.875 to cap the team's evening. Ingram's score equaled her own team season-best, and the sophomore now owns the top nine vaults in the program's 21-year history.

UAA will compete only one more time as a team this season, April 14-16 in Ithaca, N.Y., at USAGs. However, Ingram is likely to qualify as an individual on vault for the NCAA Division I West Regionals, April 9 in Seattle.
