Ingram, Burton brighten dark day at USAGs

ITHACA, N.Y. (Apr. 14) - Dominique Ingram and Jamie Burton combined for four All-America performances, but the Seawolves struggled from start to finish as a team Thursday, placing eighth in the preliminary team competition at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships. UAA's score of 186.850 was only slightly better than its lowest of the season as it failed to advance to Friday's team finals.

Ingram was second on bars with a 9.8, fourth on vault with a 9.675, and fourth in the all-around at 38.050. Burton was third on balance beam with a UAA season-best 9.775. Both gymnasts clinched All-America honors by placing in the top eight Thursday, and advance to Saturday's individual events finals, where they will compete for national titles.

Ingram, a sophomore from Kent, Wash., is the defending USAG champion on vault and floor exercise. Her 9.525 score on floor Thursday was only good for 30th place, costing her a shot at defending that title Saturday. The bars score of 9.8 was a personal season-high and tied for the sixth-best score in school history.

Burton, meanwhile, finished strong on the last rotation by equaling UAA's best beam routine of the year. The Owasso, Okla., freshman's performance brings the Seawolves' all-time number of USAG All-Americans to 39.

Other than those performances, however, little went right for the Seawolves in their first-ever team competition at Nationals.

Fellow Mountain Pacific Sports Federation squads UC Davis (193.550) and Seattle Pacific (191.550) went 1-2 in the preliminaries and advance to the team finals along with Rutgers (191.275) and Texas Woman's University (190.450).
