Kimball, Jurasek take marathon titles

ANCHORAGE (June 18) - Anchorage's Will Kimball won his second straight men's marathon title and Anchorage's Esther Jurasek took the women's marathon crown in the 32nd Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon, held today under rainy and cool skies.


A field of 3,857 runners registered for the event, which is presented by ConocoPhillips and co-sponsored by the Municipality of Anchorage's Parks & Recreation and the University of Alaska Anchorage.

As the top Alaskans, both Kimball and Jurasek will receive a pair of round-trip tickets to Hawaii, courtesy of Hawaiian Vacations, to run in the Honolulu Marathon later this year.



Kimball fought off former UAA runner Todd List to win in 2 hours, 34 minutes and 18 seconds. List was second in 2:40:59 and former UAA runner and assistant coach, Vernon Campbell, was third in 2:42:25.



Jurasek, another former UAA student-athlete, won the women's marathon in 3:01:47. Kelly Drometer was second in 3:07:13 and Erica Schramm third in 3:17:10.



UAA runner's Aaron Dickson, David Kiplagat and Drew Dickson went 1-2-3 in the men's half marathon. Aaron Dickson's winning time was 1:14:45. Jane LeBlond was the women's half marathon winner in 1:28:37, while Debbie Cropper was second and Kyle Gauthier was third.



Jeff Young won the men's five-miler in 31:16 while Ari Goldstein was the women's five-miler champion in 34:19. The boys' 1.6-mile youth cup winner was Matthew Dobbins in 12:47 and Amelia Hennessy was the girls' youth cup champ in 14:46.



The Fantastic Four won the marathon relay event in the time of 2:37:37.
