Bulldogs bury UAA with four-goal third

ANCHORAGE ? Alaska Anchorage suffered its second defeat on home ice this season with a 7-4 setback to Minnesota Duluth tonight at Sullivan Arena.

The Bulldogs (4-8-3, 3-8-3 WCHA) would score four times in the third period to blow open a tightly contested game and snap a three-game losing skid. The Seawolves (7-5-2, 5-5-0 WCHA), who held a commanding 42-19 advantage in shots on goal, had their three-game win streak ended with the loss.

Justin Bourne led UAA's efforts on offense scoring one goal and two assists, senior defenseman Mark Smith added two goals and sophomore Jay Beagle tallied one goal.

Freshman goalie Alex Stalock was solid in net for UMD recording 36 saves, including 18 in the opening period, to earn his third win of the season.

The Seawolves dominated play during the first 20 minutes, including owning a 13-1 advantage in shots on goal at the midway point of the period but trailed 1-0 at the first break on a Michael Gergen power-play tally at 17:42.

The teams would exchange goals in the second, getting two goals each. Bourne knotted the game at 1-1 at 5:28 of the period, before UMD would regain a 2-1 lead on a Mason Raymond power-play tally at 14:33. Beagle tied the game for the second time with a power-play goal at 17:53, but the Bulldogs would score just 21 seconds later to take a one-goal advantage into the break.

UMD built its lead to 4-2 on a shorthanded score from Bryan McGregor 2:22 into the third, but once again the Seawolves would come back with an even-strength goal from Smith just over a minute later, pulling UAA to within one at 4-3. However, the Bulldogs would score three unanswered goals in a 3:16 span to pull away.

Smith added his second goal of the night on a power-play chance with two seconds remaining on the clock.

UAA's usually reliable special team units had trouble against UMD, allowing three power-play scores and a shorthanded goal, while going 2-of-8 with the man advantage.

Goalie Nathan Lawson recorded 11 saves in a losing cause before being replaced by freshman Jon Olthius after UMD's fifth goal. Olthius made one save and allowed two goals in 15 minutes and 13 seconds worth of playing time.

UAA played without senior captain Charlie Kronschnabel who suffered a lower body injury in Friday night's game.

The Seawolves return to action next weekend for a two-game road series at Colorado College.
