ANCHORAGE -- The UAA volleyball team made a huge comeback from a 2-0 deficit, but fell short in the fifth game as Briar Cliff claimed the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational title with a 30-20, 30-28, 22-30, 23-30, 15-11 victory over the home team at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
The Seawolves (3-5) were led by 16 kills and 11 digs from outside hitter Heather Lyons, one of three UAA players to make the all-tournament team. However, tournament Most Outstanding Player Kayla Bessmer made sure BCU (7-2) would not collapse, finishing with 50 assists and 10 digs in the title tilt.
The Chargers, an NAIA club from Sioux City, Iowa, were led by 14 kills from Kari Dierks and 24 digs from Alex Anstine. Outside hitter Renee Beiermann (12 kills) joined Bessmer on the all-tourney team.
UAA, in search of just its third title in the tournament's 13-year history, also got good showings from all-tourney selections Chelsey Jones (12 kills, 6 blocks) and Tehane Kahalehau (46 assists, 7 kills, 10 digs, 4 blocks), but it would wind up being the Seawolves' sixth runner-up finish.
Although the Chargers dominated the fifth game, their key victory came in the second frame when they rebounded from a 28-26 deficit to score the final four points.
Lyons sparked the Seawolf comeback with seven kills on eight attacks in Game 3, and Jones pounded five kills in the Game 4 win before the team ran out of gas in the final frame.
The Seawolves lost despite outdigging (88-78) and outblocking (13-9) their opponents, while BCU committed 12 fewer attack errors and outhit UAA .125 to .104.
Sophomore walk-on Jessica Morehouse had her best collegiate performance with nine kills and a pair of block assists, and freshman Meghan Koizumi led the Seawolves with 22 digs.
UAA dives into Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next week with home matches against defending league co-champions Seattle Pacific (Thur., Sept. 7) and Central Washington (Sat., Sept. 9). Both matches begin at 7 p.m. at the WFSC.
