Saints upset Seawolf women

LACEY, Wash. – Rebecca Kielpinski had 15 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn't enough Thursday as Alaska Anchorage had its 7-game winning streak stopped with a 69-57 women's basketball loss to Saint Martin's at SMU Pavilion.

With the loss, the Seawolves (21-5, 10-5 GNAC), ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, missed a golden opportunity to move into a first-place tie in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with just one game remaining. That was because league leader Seattle Pacific – No. 4 in the region – lost its game at Northwest Nazarene earlier in the evening.

Saint Martin's (9-17, 5-10) was led by four double-digits scorers, including center Kassie Ludeman's 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Saints have gotten hot at season's end, having now won four of their last six.

Kielpinski had another productive night for UAA with 7-of-11 shooting, but the rest of the Seawolves shot just 15 of 58 (26 percent), with no one else scoring in double figures.

Junior Maria Nilsson had scored points (3-11 3FG), senior Mari Callahan had seven points and seven rebounds, and senior Jayci Stone had just six points (2-10 3FG) to go with her eight rebounds.

The Seawolves set a school record for the second time with 36 three-point attempts, but only 10 found the net. Meanwhile, SMU shot 10 of 24 from long range and outscored UAA 17-3 from the free throw line.

UAA, which suffered only its second double-digit defeat of the season, gets a chance to close the regular season strong Saturday when it visits Western Oregon (3-23, 2-13) at 4 p.m. AST. That game is available for a live internet webcast at greatnorthwest.tv.

A UAA win over WOU and an SPU loss against Seattle would mean a share of the league title for the Seawolves.
