GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? Alaska Anchorage's winless skid was pushed to seven consecutive games as No. 4-ranked North Dakota downed the Seawolves 3-1 to earn a series sweep in front of a capacity crowd of 11,779 fans here tonight at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Senior goaltender Jean-Philippe Lamoureux came up big for the Fighting Sioux (16-8-1, 13-7-0 WCHA), stopping 35 shots, including 15 in the second period and 11 more in the third, to help extend UND's win streak to seven games.
UAA (6-12-6, 2-12-4 WCHA), which tied a season-high in shot attempts with 36, was held scoreless in six power-play opportunities.
The Sioux built a 2-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the first period on goals from T.J. Oshie at 3:45 and Matt Watkins at 8:23. Senior Merit Waldrop would cut the lead to 2-1 with an unassisted even-strength tally at 12:41 of the second, but Chris VandeVelde would put an end to any UAA comeback thoughts with a goal at the 2:36 mark of the third.
The ?Wolves owned a decisive 16-3 margin in shots in the second and 11-5 advantage in the third, held the Sioux to a season-low 13 attempts for the game. UAA also held the Sioux scoreless on four man-advantage opportunities, marking the second time in four games it has shut out an opponent on the power play.
Each team went 0 for 3 on the power play in the final period.
Freshman Bryce Christianson got the starting nod in net for the second straight night, but would be replaced by sophomore Jon Olthuis after allowing two scores on just three shots. Olthuis finished the night with nine saves, while surrendering one goal in 50:51 of playing time.
The Seawolves return home next weekend for a two-game WCHA series against Michigan Tech.
