Tie gives UAA hockey fast start

ANCHORAGE - The Alaska Anchorage hockey team ran its unbeaten streak to four games after tying Minnesota-Duluth 1-1 in a WCHA encounter Saturday night at the Sullivan Arena. The Seawolves are now 4-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in WCHA play while UMD is now 3-1-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the WCHA.

The Seawolf start is its best since the 1991-92 campaign when they went 6-0-0 over their first six games.

The Bulldogs got on the board first as Justin Fontaine scored on the power play at 10:29 of the first period with assists from Drew Akins and Jack Connolly. The Seawolves were able to tie it up at 1-1 with just 33 seconds left in the first period on a goal by Paul Crowder, assisted by Jared Tuton.

UAA netminder Bryce Christianson and UMD goalie Alex Stalock both pitched shutouts the rest of the way. Christiansen, who remained unbeaten at 2-0-1 on the season, was credited with 19 saves and Stalock, now 3-1-2, had 20.

UAA owned a slight 21-20 shots on goal edge. UMD went 1-for-7 on the power play while the Seawolves were 0-for-5 ? the first time this season UAA has failed to score via the man advantage. The Seawolves came into the game ranked No. 3 in the country (10-for-33, .303) on the power play.

Still, the Seawolves get off to a solid start to the rugged WCHA regular season with three points, putting them in fourth place in the 10-team association in the early going.

UAA makes its first trip of the season outside the state of Alaska to take Michigan Tech (1-3-0, 0-2-0) in Houghton on Oct. 31 & Nov. 1 Those games are scheduled for 3:37 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. Alaska time, respectively.
