UAA skaters score 6-2 win

WASILLA - Junior Josh Lunden tallied two goals and an assist and sophomore Kane Lafranchise notched the decisive score in the second period to lift Alaska Anchorage to a come-from-behind 6-2 win over the University of British Columbia in the Seawolves second exhibition tune-up at the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Ice Arena.

UAA trailed 2-0 before Lunden scored a power play goal to put the home team on the board with just under three minutes left in the first. Freshman Curtis Leinweber and sophomore Brad McCabe earned assists on the score.

Freshman Jade Portwood deflected the equalizer past UBC goalie Gerry Festa with a 1:29 left in the first off a sharp shot from the point by senior Mat Robinson.

At nearly five minutes into the second, Lafranchise scored the game-winner off an assist from Portwood and sophomore Winston DayChief, Lunden and junior Kevin Clark each added goals to complete the win.

Leinweber finished with a team-high two assists, while junior Nils Backstrom, junior Paul Crowder, Clark and senior Shane Lovdahl all tallied helpers.

UAA held a decisive edge on special teams, shutting out the Thunderbirds on all six of their man-advantage chances, while going 2-for-5 on its on power play. The Seawolves, who were outshot 29-26, also got a shorthanded goal from DayChief to complete the special teams mastery.

Sophomore Bryce Christianson and junior Jon Olthuis split time in goal for UAA. Christianson, who gave up both goals, started and stopped 10 Thunderbird shots before Olthuis relieved him mid-way through the second. Olthuis finished with 17 saves to help close the win.

The Seawolves were whistled for 20 minutes of penalty time compared to 18 for the Thunderbirds, who won the face off battle 34-32.

UAA opens the 2008-09 season on Friday, Oct. 10 against Connecticut at the 18th annual Kendall Hockey Classic at the Sullivan Arena.
