Top-5 foes fell 'Wolves at St. Paul tourney

ST. PAUL, Minn. ? Despite an impressive second-set win over the defending national champions, the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday as they fell 3-0 to No. 5 Truman State and 3-1 to No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul at the Radisson-Roseville Concordia Classic.

After upsetting No. 8 Augustana in their tourney opener Friday, the Seawolves finished with three straight losses to ranked opponents. UAA completes its non-conference schedule with an 8-5 record, with all five losses coming against nationally ranked foes.

Additionally, the eight total victories are already the most for a UAA squad since 2004.

The Seawolves return home next week to begin the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season against Northwest Nazarene (Thur., Sept. 18) and Seattle Pacific (Sat., Sept. 20). Both matches start at 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

# 3 Concordia-St. Paul 3, UAA 1
Rhea Cardwell had 14 kills and fellow senior outside hitter Joanna Johnson nearly had a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs as UAA lost 25-15, 21-25, 25-14, 25-18 to defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul on its home court at the Gangelhoff Center.

The balanced Golden Bears (11-1) won their 11th straight thanks to 17 kills from Emily Palkert, and 13 kills apiece from Sadie Kessler (.542 att. pct.) and Whitney Meierotto.

After dropping the first set, UAA shocked the Golden Bears with a 6-0 spurt to open the next frame, eventually stretching the lead as high as 17-9. CU would scratch back within 24-21 before senior Jessica Morehouse's kill evened the match.

The hosts easily won the third set, however they had to struggle with the scrappy Seawolves in the fourth. A kill by Rachel Kidwell and a block by Cortney Lundberg and Johnson cut CU's lead to 16-15, but the Golden Bears started to slowly pull away and finished the match with four straight points.

UAA setter Calli Scott totaled 38 assists, while Lundberg led UAA with four total blocks.

#5 Truman State 3, UAA 0
Senior outside hitter Rachel Kidwell had a solid offensive showing, but the rest of the Seawolf volleyball team was held in check by the nation's No. 5-ranked team as Truman State prevailed 25-12, 25-12, 25-22 at the Radisson-Roseville Concordia Classic here Saturday.

UAA (8-4) got seven kills from Kidwell, Rhea Cardwell and Joanna Johnson as it lost its second straight match to a nationally ranked opponent.

TSU (9-2) was led by Jenna Novelli's 12-kill, 11-dig effort as the Missouri school managed a .343 attack percentage and outdug the Seawolves 58-40.

Kidwell finished with just one attack error on 15 attempts for a .400 attack percentage, while Cardwell came up with a team-high 11 digs.
