Seawolves drop exhibition opener, 4-3

WASILLA ? Despite staking an early two-goal lead on goals from defensemen and a three-assist night from junior forward Josh Lunden, the Alaska Anchorage hockey team dropped a back-and-forth, season-opening exhibition game 4-3 to the U.S. National Under-18 team Thursday at the Curtis C. Menard Memorial Ice Arena.

U-18 forward Kenny Ryan put in his second goal less than two minutes into the third period to snap a 3-3 game and the visitors thwarted a persistent UAA offensive effort the rest of the way.

The Seawolves struck four and a half minutes into game when sophomore defenseman Luka Vidmar punched a shot from the slot past U.S. goalie Adam Murray on a pass from junior forward Brian Bales. Lunden also picked up an assist on the tally.

UAA went up 2-0 on senior defenseman Mat Robinson's power-play score through the pads of Murray, with assists going to junior forward Kevin Clark and Lunden.

The U-18 squad answered with two quick scores from forwards Ryan Bourque and Jeremy Morin to send the teams into the locker rooms knotted at 2-2. The visitors kept rolling and struck again early in the second on a goal from forward Kenny Ryan.

Clark got the Seawolves even with a breakaway back-hander midway through the second with assists to Lunden and Bales.
Lunden (three assists), Bales (two assists) and Clark (goal and an assist) all had multi-point games for the Seawolves.

Junior Jon Olthuis, sophomore Bryce Christianson and freshman Dusan Sidor split time in goal for UAA with a combined 10 saves. Murray recovered from his early struggles to tally 26 saves for Team USA.

The Seawolves finished 1 for 5 on the power play, while USA was successful on 2 of 6 man advantages.
Next up for UAA is a final exhibition contest in Wasilla against the University of British Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 4.
