Kielpinski, Taylor push Seawolves past Saints

ANCHORAGE ? Rebecca Kielpinski had 16 points and 17 rebounds and Kiki Taylor nearly delivered a triple-double as the No. 1-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team rolled to a 73-40 victory over Saint Martin's at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Saturday.

UAA (20-1, 7-0 GNAC) also got 12 points from senior guard Elisha Harris to extend its school-record winning streak to 18 games.

The Saints (13-6, 4-3), who have suffered two of their losses to the Seawolves, were led by forward Dara Zack's eight points and seven rebounds. The visitors from Lacey, Wash., were held to 26.3 percent shooting and outrebounded 47-31.

The Seawolves took control from the outset, using 16-2 run to take a 22-6 lead less than 10 minutes in.

After taking a 36-20 advantage to the locker room, UAA slowly increased its cushion the rest of the way, led by Taylor's 11 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. The junior guard from Colorado Springs, Colo., earned career-highs in the latter two categories, grabbing all of her rebounds on the defensive end.

Kielpinski, meanwhile, kept moving up the career charts at UAA, passing Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Cheryl Bishop (1,592 pts, 1982-87) for No. 5 on the career scoring list. With 1,603 points and 1,069 rebounds, the two-time All-American is now just 20 points shy of No. 2 on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-time scoring list and 14 boards shy of tying the rebounding record.

The Mandan, N.D., native shot 7 of 9 from the field as she pulled down 15 or more rebounds for the 13th time in her career. Kielpinski also got another school record all to herself with her 112th career start.

Harris (2-4 3FG, 4-4 FT) had her second straight double-digit outing, while fellow senior guard Jackie Thiel increased her nation-leading three-point percentage (.612 prior to the game) by going 3 of 3 from long range. Thiel also dished five of UAA's 23 total assists.

UAA completes a 5-game homestand Wednesday at 7 p.m. when it takes on rival Alaska Fairbanks (5-12, 0-8) in a GNAC encounter.
