Sioux blank Seawolves in WCHA opener

ANCHORAGE - Nationally No. 2-ranked North Dakota shut out host Alaska Anchorage, 5-0, in the Seawolves' WCHA opener Friday night at the Sullivan Arena.

UND (4-0-1, 2-0-1 WCHA) extended its streak against UAA (2-3-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) with three goals in the first period, followed by goals in the second and third periods.

No. 2 UND found the back of the net on its third shot of the evening at 5:47 from the stick of sophomore Mario Lamoureux - his second of the season. Before the first period was over, the Fighting Sioux added two more goals - by junior Jake Marto (power play) and sophomore Jason Gregoire - for a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission.

UND, which boasts a starting roster with 11 NHL draftees, extended their lead to 4-0 in the second period. Junior Evan Trupp, an Anchorage native, scored at 12:39 on a pass from junior Brad Malone.

With just  34 seconds expired on the clock in the third period, UND's captain Chay Genoway rebounded and fired one past senior goaltender Jon Olthuis. Senior Chris VandeWelde and UND's netminder freshman rookie Aaron Dell were both credited with the assists.

Picking up the win for UND was goalie Dell (1-0-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) in his first start of the season with 16 saves. Olthuis was credited with the loss, dropping his season record to 2-2-0 and 0-1-0 in conference play. Olthuis stopped 24 shots, earning him the Player of the Game.

UND found the net 17 times in the first period of play - the most allowed in a period by UAA this season. The Fighting Sioux completed the game with 29 shots, compared to UAA's 16.

In a penalty filled affair, the Seawolves were tagged for 9-29 minutes of penalties, while UND went 10-31. Both teams received a game misconduct, served by UAA's junior Craig Parkinson and UND's freshman Corban Knight.

The Fighting Sioux, who remained undefeated this season on the penalty kill, stopped UAA on seven occasions and scored on three of their seven man advantages. The Seawolves were held scoreless on the man advantage for the second time of the season

Last time UAA was shutout was on Nov. 30, 2007 by Colorado College (1-0).

The Seawolves and the Fighting Sioux will face off again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. at the Sullivan Arena.
