Matthisen powers sweep of Penguins

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Junior outside hitter Jackie Matthisen notched 13 kills Monday as the 23rd-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team won its third straight match with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 sweep of Dominican at the Conlan Recreation Center.

The Seawolves (5-2) won their first true road test of the season as they also got nine kills and a match-high 15 digs from junior outside hitter McKenzie Moss, plus six kills on .455 hitting and four total blocks from freshman Robyn Burton.

The Penguins (0-5), of the Pacific West Conference, were led by nine kills from Ashley Pittman.

“We're still not playing like we did against against San Bernardino, but that was an improvement over our match against Humboldt,” said UAA head coach Chris Green, whose team upset then-No. 2 Cal State-San Bernardino in three sets before being stretched to five sets in a victory over winless Humboldt State, both Saturday at the Western Oregon tournament. “We're still struggling with consistency.

“Jackie really stepped up tonight and had a great match, even though her stats don't look spectacular.”

The Seawolves found themselves trailing 21-20 in the first set before taking the lead on consecutive kills by Moss, then getting subsequent kills from Matthisen, Nikkie Viotto and Marie Borowikow.

UAA pulled away from a 12-12 tie in the second set by winning seven of the next eight points, and made a similar run after being tied 10-10 in the third frame.

Right-side hitter Lee Golden had five kills on .364 hitting and Viotto matched her career-high with four aces for the second straight match. Freshman Siobhan Johansen dished 15 assists and sophomore Adriana Aukusitino had 13 for the Seawolves.

UAA gets a stiffer test Tuesday when it travels across the Golden Gate Bridge to take on San Francisco State at 6 p.m. ADT. Like the Seawolves, the Gators (2-2) are coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009.
