DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 10/13-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs handed the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves their fifth straight Western Collegiate Hockey Association loss with a 5-0 shutout Friday at the Amsoil Arena.
UMD (6-3-2, 4-2-1 WCHA), the defending NCAA champions, came out on fire in the opening stanza with four unanswered goals – three even strength and one power-play tally – in a span of eight minutes. Following a scoreless second frame, the Bulldogs added a tally in third for the final 5-0 score in the teams' first meeting at the Amsoil Arena, which open December of 2010.
The Bulldogs struck at 4:38 of the first and didn't let up, adding tallies at 5:04, 6:24 and 12:39 in the period to extend their unbeaten streak to seven games.
The third UMD goal, scored on the man advantage, chased sophomore netminder Rob Gunderson from net and gave the goaltending opportunity to classmate Chris Kamal, who entered the crease at 6:24 of the 1st.
The Seawolves and Bulldogs skated to a scoreless second period with UAA enjoying two power-play chances and UMD getting one, before the Bulldogs capitalized on a power play at 4:46 of the third.
In net for the Bulldogs was senior Kenny Reiter, the brother of former UAA goalie Kevin Reiter (2001-04). Reiter made 27 saves in the win, while setting the UMD record for the longest consecutive shutout streak. Kamal made 22 saves and Gunderson made 4 stops.
Following a 15-4 UMD advantage in shots in the first, the Seawolves led in the second, 10-9 and in the third 13-7.
The Seawolves and Bulldogs will face-off again at 4:07 p.m. AST on Saturday.
