Seawolves fall short against Bulldogs

DULUTH, Minn. – Despite a first-period goal by freshman Eric Scheid, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves fell to the No. 10/13-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs at the Amsoil Arena on Saturday in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game.

Sparked by Scheid's first collegiate goal, the Seawolves (3-6-1, 0-6-0 WCHA) took a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission and held on to it until halfway through the second when the Bulldogs (7-3-2, 5-2-1 WCHA) found the net. UMD scored two goals in the second and one in the third for the WCHA sweep and four points.

Scheid, a forward from Blaine, Minn., furnished his first goal and point of his career on a pass from senior defenseman Brad Gorham at 5:18 of the opening stanza. Scheid, who was skating on the top line for UAA tonight, became just the second UAA rookie to tally a goal this season. Classmate forward Sam Mellor has two goals.

UAA's first WCHA win of the season faded away at 10:50 of the second frame when UMD's Derek Johnson knotted the game at 1-1. Just under four minutes later, Travis Oleksuk was awarded with the game-winning goal on the power play at 14:44. J.T. Brown was credited with the first assist on both scores.

The Seawolves continued to look for the equalizer in the third but came up short and at 10:09, Jack Connolly registered his fourth point of the weekend, giving UMD a two-goal lead and the 3-1 win.

Sophomore goaltender Chris Kamal (2-3-0), who dressed for the majority of the game on Friday, posted 33 saves in the loss, while former UAA goalie Kevin Reiter's younger brother, Kenny Reiter, also made 33 saves for the win. UMD edged UAA slightly in shots on goal, taking a 36-34 advantage.

UAA was 0-3 on the man advantage, while UM scored on 1-of-4 opportunities.

The Seawolves will return to the Sullivan Arena on Nov. 18-19 when they host the Michigan Tech Huskies for a WCHA series.
