Track season commences at UNLV Invite

THIS WEEK: The Alaska Anchorage track & field teams will commence the 2011 slate this weekend when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev., for the UNLV Spring Break Track Classic on March 5. Events will start at 8:30 a.m. AST and continue through 3 p.m. AST.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW: The Seawolves return 30 student-athletes (18 men, 12 women) and add 13 newcomers to the 2011 roster (5 men, 8 women) ... in addition, the Seawolves will get All-Americans David Registe and Shaun Ward back after the duo redshirted last season due to injuries ... this year's edition returns all four 2010 All-Americans in seniors Demietrius Preston and Marko Cheseto , junior Alfred Kangogo and sophomore Micah Chelimo ... on the women's side, UAA returns three NCAA participants – senior Hallidie Wilt , junior Miriam Kipng'eno and sophomore Ruth Keino ... UAA will compete in nine meets in California, two in Oregon and one in Nevada throughout the next three months – including the prestigious 53rd annual Mt. SAC Relays on April 14-16 in Walnut, Calif. ... qualifying Seawolves will wrap up the season with the GNAC Championships on May 13-14 at Monmouth, Ore., and the NCAA Championships on May 26-28 in Turlock, Calif.

2010 SEASON RECAP: The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves registered multiple successes during the 2010 track & field season, as they produced four All-Americans at the NCAA Championships, won a combined nine titles at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, recorded 14 all-conference finishes, broke three GNAC records and set 16 new UAA records.

AT THE 2010 NCAAS: The Seawolves qualified nine athletes (5 women, 4 men) for the 2010 NCAA Div. II Track & Field Championships in just the sixth year of the program … the UAA men's team, which finished 14th with 17 points, captured four All-Americans in Demietrius Preston and
Marko Cheseto , Alfred Kangogo and Micah Chelimo … Preston (Anchorage) recorded UAA's best finish of the meet, finishing second in the long jump with a personal best of 25-3.25 … for the second time of his career, Cheseto (Kapenguria, Kenya) earned two All-America accolades, finishing sixth in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters — the only Seawolf to record two All-America honors in the same season … Kangogo (Eldoret, Kenya) registered his first All-America award with an eighth-place showing in the 1,500 meters, while Chelimo (Kapkoi, Kenya) raced to seventh place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase … on the women's side, Elisha Harris (West Jordan, Utah) and Ruth Keino (Kapcheno, Kenya) both produced a team-best 11th-place finish in their respective events … Harris recorded a toss of 134-9 in the javelin, while Keino registered a UAA-record time of 16:44.24 in the 5,000 meters … also representing UAA at the NCAAs was senior Laura Carr (10K), Hallidie Wilt (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Miriam Kipng'eno (1500m, 5K) … the five UAA women is the most the Seawolves have ever qualified.

GARLATZ RECEIVES USTFCCCA HONOR: UAA's T.J. Garlatz was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) West Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year for the outdoor season on May 24, 2010 … Garlatz joins head coach Michael Friess (men's coach of the year) and then-junior David Registe (men's athlete of the year), who received West Region honors in 2009.

USTFCCCA POLL: The men's track & field team started the 2010 season with its best ranking of the season at No. 3 in the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Association Division II poll, the following week it drop one position to No. 4 … on the third week, UAA fell to No. 10, followed by two consecutive weeks at No. 12, three straight weeks at No. 13 and the final ranking of No. 14 … the women's team started at No. 13, dropped to 19th and advanced to 18th before falling out of the poll for the rest of the season.

BREAKING RECORDS: At the conclusion of the 2010 season, the Seawolves set 16 new school records (8 men, 8 women) and three GNAC records … Ethan Hewitt set a new GNAC/UAA record in the 400 meters at the Northridge Relays with a time of 47.62 … at the Mt. SAC Relays, Micah Chelimo (8:49.31) smashed the league record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while Marko Cheseto (13:58.85) bested his own conference record in the 5,000 meters … other UAA records were broken by Alfred Kangogo (1,500m, 3:49.46), Andrew Freed (triple jump, 44-8.75), and Casey Robinson (javelin, 175-7) and senior Ryan Rencehausen (hammer throw, 144-5) … the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Hewitt, Brad Truax, and seniors Brandon Grant and James McLaughlin posted a new record time of  3:14.98 … setting UAA records for the UAA women were seniors Laura Carr (10,000, 35:08.51) and Elisha Harris (javelin, 141-4), Ardrienna Everett (400 Hurdles, 1:02.37) and Hallidie Wilt (steeplechase, 10:48.90.23) and Ruth Keino in the 5,000m (16:44.24) and 1500m (4:34.34) … the women's 4x400-meter relay record fell to senior Meagan Friess, Wilt, Everett and Emma Bohman with a time of 4:00.61.
