FAIRBANKS - The No.2-ranked North Dakota opened their season with a 5-0 defeat of the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves in Game 1 of the fifth annual Brice Alaska Goal Rush tournament at the Carlson Center.

North Dakota's (1-0-0) Mark MacMillan added a pair of goals and Connor Gaarder was credited with three assists, as the Seawolves (1-1-1) were handed their first loss of the season, being shut out for the first time since January.

At the completion of the first 20 minutes of play, North Dakota led 2-0 with a power-play tally by Bryn Chyzyk at 8:21 and an even-strength goal by MacMillan at 13:10. North Dakota extended its lead by two more goals in the second frame with MacMillan's second of the night at 11:31 and Rocco Grimaldi's tally at 12:53. Jordan Schmaltz netted UND's final at 2:27 of the third.

Junior goaltender Chris Kamal made 25 stops in his second start of the season, while Rob Gunderson, who took to the crease for the start of the third, posted three saves. UND out shot UAA 33-21, including a 16-7 edge in the second frame.  Junior netminder Clarke Saunders, who joined UND after 46 games with Alabama-Huntsville, earned his first NCAA career shutout with 21 saves.

UAA will have a week to prepare for its next meeting with North Dakota as the Seawolves head to Grand Forks, N.D., for its Western Collegiate Hockey Association opener on Oct. 26-27.

Before that series, the Seawolves will face Merrimack College for the first time on neutral ice and just the seventh time ever when the puck drops 4:07 p.m. on Oct. 20 in Game 3 of the Brice Alaska Goal Rush.

SEAWOLF NOTES: The last time UAA was shut out was on Jan. 20, 2012 against Wisconsin (4-0). The Seawolves were unable to score a goal against UND for the first time since Oct. 23, 2009.
