Pulu powers Mustangs over Panthers

ANCHORAGE - Angelina Pulu had 16 kills and eight digs Friday to lead Western New Mexico to a 25-14, 25-20, 21-25, 25-13 victory over Adelphi in the first match of the 2012 SpringHill Suites Invitational volleyball tournament at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Ziona Verhulsdonk contributed 14 kills on .355 hitting for the Mustangs (2-5), while libero Keirsa Pakani-Tsukiy had a match-high 21 digs.

Middle blocker Kaitlyn DeStefano led the Panthers (3-2) with 12 kills, but the Garden City, N.Y., squad was out-hit .203 to .107 and out-dug 81-58 as a team.

Both teams will be back in action later Friday as WNMU faces Dixie State at 5 p.m. and Adelphi meets the home team, Alaska Anchorage, at 7 p.m.
