VB season ends with 3-0 NCAA Tourney loss

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – A quick start was not enough for 7th-seeded Alaska Anchorage on Thursday as regional player-of-the-year Shih Ting Chen had 14 kills to lift 2nd-seeded Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 sweep of the Seawolves in the NCAA Div. II West Region Volleyball Championships at The Den.

Outside hitters Brooke Pottle and Katelynn Zanders combined for 15 kills and 14 digs for UAA, which ended the season with a 21-10 record.

The Seawolves – making their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in five seasons – looked good at the beginning, jumping to leads of 5-2 and 12-9 in the opening set. But the nationally 4th-ranked Seasiders (25-1) took over at that point, using a 7-0 run to claim control.

UAA made a comeback in the second set to tie it 16-16 and 17-17 before BYUH rallied for eight of the last 10 points. The Pacific West Conference champions controlled action throughout the third set as they advanced to face 3rd-seeded UC San Diego in Friday's regional semifinals.

Senior Siobhan Johansen recorded 16 assists, three kills and five digs in her final collegiate match, while senior middle blocker Jodi Huddleston had two kills on four attempts.

Junior right-side hitter Maureen Sabado notched five kills on .444 hitting in the loss as well.
